Is iPhone Duo the Same as the iPhone Fold?

Rumored iPhone Fold name next to the official iPhone Duo name
iPhone Fold” was the rumored name. Apple’s official name is iPhone Duo.

Yes. For years, people called Apple’s folding phone the iPhone Fold. In April 2026, some leakers said it might be named iPhone Ultra instead. Apple picked a different name: iPhone Duo.

The name makes sense because the phone has two displays. You will still see “iPhone Fold” in many search results, so this page uses both names.

Heads up: Many older articles still list rumored specs, like a 7.8-inch inner screen and a December launch. Those were guesses. The numbers on this page come from Apple and from hands-on coverage after the September 9 event.

Also, don’t mix it up with Duo Mobile. That is a security app, and it has nothing to do with this phone.

iPhone Duo Release Date and Pre-Order Schedule

October 2026 calendar with iPhone Duo pre-order and launch dates marked
Mark your calendar: pre-orders open October 16, and the iPhone Duo goes on sale October 23.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait long. Apple gave clear dates at its September event.

Pre-Order Date and Launch Date

Here is the schedule, step by step:

  1. September 9: Apple announces the iPhone Duo.
  2. Friday, October 16, 5 a.m. PT: Pre-orders open. That is 8 a.m. Eastern.
  3. Friday, October 23: The phone goes on sale and starts arriving in stores.
  4. Friday, October 30: It reaches 28 more countries and regions.

Apple also says the iPhone Duo Case and Folio will be available to order on October 16.

Good to know: MacRumors reports that you can set up your pre-order in advance. Doing that before Friday may save you time when the store opens.

Countries Getting It on October 23

Apple says customers in more than 70 countries and regions can pre-order on October 16. That list includes the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, India, Japan, Germany, and France. Check Apple’s iPhone Duo page for your country.

Supply may be tight. MacRumors reports that supply will be limited at launch. If you want one on day one, order as early as you can.

Already own the iPhone 18 Pro? It launched in September. Our iPhone 18 release date guide covers that lineup.

iPhone Duo Price by Storage

Four iPhone Duo phones on rising steps with prices from $1,999 to $3,199
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and reaches $3,199 for 2TB.

The iPhone Duo price starts at $1,999. That makes it Apple’s most expensive iPhone. Storage upgrades add a lot more.

US Price for 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB

StorageUS priceExtra cost vs. 256GB
256GB$1,999None
512GB$2,199+$200
1TB$2,599+$600
2TB$3,199+$1,200

Prices from Apple’s announcement and MacRumors. Taxes are not included.

Quick math: The base iPhone Duo costs $700 more than the base iPhone 18 Pro Max, which starts at $1,299. You are paying for the folding screen and the new hinge.

Monthly Payments and Trade-In

If you don’t want to pay all at once, you have a few options:

  • Apple Card Monthly Installments: From $83.29 a month for 24 months, based on the 256GB model.
  • Apple Upgrade (leasing): From $57.99 a month for 24 months. It is provided by Klarna and is available in the U.S.
  • Carrier deals: T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T plan to offer upgrade deals.
  • Trade-in: Apple’s iPhone Duo page promotes trade-in savings on a new iPhone.
  • Apple One: New and qualified returning subscribers who buy an iPhone Duo can get three months of Apple One free.

If $1,999 feels like too much, a refurbished iPhone can cut your cost a lot.

iPhone Duo Price in India and Other Countries

Apple sets its own price for each country, and local taxes change the final number. Open your country’s page on Apple.com to see the exact price in your currency. Apple says the phone is available in India, Australia, Canada, the U.K., Germany, Japan, and many other places on October 23.

How It Compares to Other Foldables

The Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at about $1,899, according to AFP. Google’s latest Pixel Fold also starts at $1,899. So the iPhone Duo costs about $100 more than its two main rivals.

Think about resale value. A June 2026 study by SellCell, reported by MacRumors, estimated that a first-generation foldable iPhone could lose about $1,300 in value in its first year. That was an estimate made before launch, so treat it as a warning, not a promise.

iPhone Duo Specs

The iPhone Duo packs two batteries, a vapor chamber, and a hinge with more than 100 parts.

The iPhone Duo specs look like a mix of a small iPhone and a mini tablet. Most details come from Apple, with extra numbers from MacRumors.

Design, Size and Weight

The iPhone Duo folds like a book. Apple compares its closed size to a passport. The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish. The hinge cover is 3D-printed titanium with a matte look.

MeasurementClosedOpen
Width84.1 mm164.6 mm
Height117.8 mm117.8 mm
Thickness11.3 mm5.2 mm

Open, it is the thinnest iPhone ever, thinner than the 5.64 mm iPhone Air. But at 254 grams, it is also the heaviest iPhone. You will feel that in your pocket.

The buttons are simple. Volume keys sit on top. The side button holds Touch ID, and Camera Control sits below it. There is no Action button and no mute switch. A USB-C port is at the bottom.

Inner and Outer Displays

Both screens share the same aspect ratio. That means apps look the same when you open or close the phone.

DisplaySizeResolutionPixel density
Inner7.6 inches1878 × 2670430 ppi
Outer5.4 inches1398 × 2034460 ppi

Both displays support 120Hz ProMotion, Always-On, True Tone, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner screen has a matte, nano-texture cover layer. It cuts glare and helps hide the crease.

Apple Pencil support is coming later this year. It works only with the USB-C Apple Pencil, not the Apple Pencil Pro.

A20 Pro Chip and Performance

The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro. It is built on a 2-nanometer process and has 12GB of RAM, according to MacRumors.

  • The CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro.
  • The GPU is up to 40 percent faster.
  • A vapor chamber keeps heat down. Apple says sustained performance is up to 35 percent better than the iPhone 17 Pro.

That extra cooling matters on a thin phone. It helps during long games and when you use two apps at once.

Cameras

The iPhone Duo has two rear cameras:

  • 48MP Fusion Main: 26mm, f/1.6, with sensor-shift stabilization. It also gives you a 2x optical-quality zoom.
  • 48MP Ultra Wide: 13mm, f/2.2, with macro support.

There is no dedicated telephoto lens. The 2x zoom comes from the main sensor. On the front, the outer display has a 12MP camera. The inner display has a hidden camera under the screen for FaceTime.

For video, you get 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision. You can also add Cinematic effects after you record, at up to 60 fps.

Battery Life and Charging

Apple put one battery in each half. They work together as one. Apple’s estimates are:

  • Up to 24 hours of typical use, with both screens used equally
  • Up to 31 hours of video on the inner display
  • Up to 44 hours of video on the outer display

Wired charging reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a 60W or stronger adapter. Wireless charging reaches 50 percent in about 30 minutes with MagSafe or Qi2 and a 35W or stronger adapter. Once you own it, our guide on how to check battery health on iPhone helps you track wear over time.

eSIM-Only Connectivity

There is no SIM tray. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only everywhere, like the iPhone Air before it. It supports two active eSIMs. Apple says more than 500 carriers support eSIM, and you can read Apple’s eSIM guide to learn how it works.

Other connectivity upgrades include:

  • Apple’s new C2 modem with 5G (and mmWave in the U.S.)
  • Apple’s N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread
  • USB-C with data speeds up to 10Gb/s
  • Satellite features like Emergency SOS and Messages via satellite

Hinge, Crease and IP68 Durability

The hinge has more than 100 parts. It holds the screen flat when open, and magnets snap it shut. Apple says the nano-texture layer minimizes crease visibility. Early hands-on coverage calls the crease very hard to see.

However, Apple has not shared fold-test data yet. MacRumors also reports that Apple says the inner cover layer can be replaced.

The phone has an IP68 rating. It can handle water up to 6 meters deep for 30 minutes in lab tests.

“Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions.” — Apple’s iPhone Duo fine print

Safety warning: Liquid damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty. If your iPhone Duo gets wet, dry it first and don’t charge it while it is wet.

iPhone Duo Features on iOS 27.1

iPhone Duo Split View with two apps side by side
The big inner screen lets you use two apps at once on an iPhone for the first time.

The iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. Apple changed the software so it fits two screens, but it still feels like an iPhone. Here are the iPhone Duo features you will notice first.

“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” — John Ternus, Apple CEO, in Apple’s press release

Split View and Multitasking

The big screen finally lets you use two apps at once on an iPhone. You can:

  • Open two apps side by side in Split View
  • Open two windows of the same app, like two Safari pages
  • Save app pairs and jump back to them later
  • Chat with Siri on one side while you read on the other

The layout also changes. The Dock, Lock Screen controls, and app buttons move to the side to save vertical space. The Dynamic Island turns sideways. When the phone is open, you see two Home Screen pages, with a column of widgets on the left. Apple says Netflix, Zoom, and Slack already have designs that use the larger screen.

Duo-Only Camera Features

The folding body unlocks tricks that no other iPhone can do:

  • Smart Take: On-device AI waits until everyone is ready, then takes the photo for you. No timer needed.
  • Duo Preview: The outer screen shows your subject a live preview, so they can fix their pose.
  • Kid Cue: Peanuts animations play on the outer screen to get kids to look at the camera.
  • Duo FaceTime: A person next to you can join your video call using the outer screen.
  • Better selfies: Use the sharper rear cameras and check your shot on the outer screen.

You can also half-fold the phone and stand it up like a tiny tripod.

StandBy and Siri AI

StandBy gets an upgrade. It now works on either screen, even when the phone is not charging. You can turn it into a clock, photo frame, or widget display. New Calendar and Weather faces are included.

The iPhone Duo also supports Siri AI, Apple’s rebuilt assistant. It can use your personal context, understand what is on your screen, and keep a conversation going. It is in beta and starts in English. Apple says it will not be available in the EU at first.

Keep your phone current so you get fixes quickly. Our iPhone update guide shows you how.

What iPhone Duo Doesn’t Have

The iPhone Duo is packed, but Apple made some trade-offs. Know these before you pay $1,999.

  • No Face ID. There was no room for the TrueDepth camera system. You get Touch ID in the side button instead. It works whether the phone is open or closed.
  • No telephoto lens. You only get the 2x zoom from the main camera.
  • No Action button or mute switch.
  • No variable aperture, ProRAW, or ProRes. These stay on the iPhone 18 Pro models, according to MacRumors.
  • No SIM tray. It is eSIM only.
  • A lower-resolution front camera. The outer camera is 12MP, not the 18MP on the iPhone 17 and 18 Pro.
  • No Apple Pencil Pro support. Only the USB-C Apple Pencil works, and it arrives later this year.

The good news is that Touch ID still works with Apple Pay. If you need a refresher, read our guide on how to use Apple Pay on iPhone. You can also unlock the Duo with a paired Apple Watch. Our guide on how to connect Apple Watch to iPhone walks you through the setup.

iPhone Duo Colors, Cases and Accessories

iPhone Duo in Star White and Night Sky
The iPhone Duo comes in two colors: Star White and Night Sky.

The iPhone Duo colors are simple. You can pick Star White or Night Sky, which is a dark blue. Both have a polished titanium frame.

Apple also made new accessories. You can order them on October 16, the same day pre-orders start.

iPhone Duo Folio with KickstandNavy Blue, Taupe$129
USB-C Apple Pencil—$79

Case and Folio prices are from Apple. The Pencil price is from MacRumors. Pencil support for the iPhone Duo arrives later this year.

  • The Case is thin and light. It has two parts that wrap around both sides of the phone.
  • The Folio has a built-in kickstand that folds away when you don’t need it. It is great for video calls and movies.
  • Both work with MagSafe, Qi2 25W, and Qi-certified chargers.

Apple hasn’t shared advice on third-party screen protectors for the inner display yet. So check before you stick anything on it. When you are ready to shop, browse our iPhone case reviews and our screen protector guide.

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max size comparison
The iPhone Duo opens to a 7.6-inch screen, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max has a single 6.9-inch screen.

This is the choice many people will face. Both phones launched at the same event, and both use the A20 Pro chip. So the real question is: do you want a bigger screen or a better camera?

Choose the iPhone Duo if you watch a lot of video, work on your phone, or love the idea of a pocket tablet.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you care most about camera zoom, Face ID, and saving $700.

Want something cheaper than both? Last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max is still a strong phone. Our guide to the newest iPhone shows every model Apple sells right now.

Should You Buy the iPhone Duo?

It depends on how you use your phone. Here is a simple way to decide.

Buy It If

  • You watch videos, read, or game a lot and want a bigger screen.
  • You work on your phone and want two apps side by side.
  • You like new tech and can handle a first-generation product.
  • You are fine with Touch ID and a heavier phone.

Skip It Or Wait If

  • You want the best camera zoom. The iPhone 18 Pro models have a telephoto lens, and the Duo does not.
  • You rely on Face ID or the Action button.
  • You don’t want to pay $1,999 or more.
  • You worry about long-term durability, since Apple hasn’t shared fold-test data.
  • You want to wait for version two. MacRumors reports that Apple plans a second-generation iPhone Duo in 2027.

Our take: The iPhone Duo is a strong first try, and the screen is the star. But it is a luxury phone. Most people will be happier with an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max.

How to Get Ready for iPhone Duo

A little prep makes launch day smooth. Follow this checklist.

Back Up Your Current iPhone

  1. Back up your phone. Follow our guide on how to back up your iPhone.
  2. Check your iCloud space. If it is full, see our fix for iCloud storage full.
  3. Update your software. Your old phone should run the latest iOS before you transfer.

Transfer Your Data and eSIM

  1. Ask your carrier about eSIM. The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray, so you need an eSIM plan. Apple says more than 500 carriers support eSIM.
  2. Plan your data move. Our guide on how to transfer iPhone to iPhone shows you Quick Start, iCloud, and computer methods.
  3. Set up your pre-order. Do it before October 16 so you are ready at 5 a.m. PT.
  4. Prepare your old phone for trade-in. First turn off Find My iPhone, then erase the iPhone.

Tip: Apple says iPhone Handoff lets you switch between two iPhones that share one number. At launch, it works with T-Mobile in the U.S. and Telekom in Germany.

iPhone Duo FAQ
